Allow me to share an incredibly unique experience that left an indelible mark on my life. It was an immersion in a profound connection with the earth, history, and the land itself. My journey with the Dalai Lama Fellowship was nothing short of transformative, altering the course of my life in ways I never anticipated.
During my time at the University of Virginia, where the echoes of history resonate deeply, I encountered numerous transformative moments. Three instances stand out in particular, revealing the profound power of self-discovery and connection:
1. Connecting to the Land and History
On one of the days, we embarked on a series of sessions that delved into our connection with the land and nature. The University of Virginia’s history is entwined with stories of slavery and oppression, reflecting a painful past. As part of this experience, we were led on a tour through the forest trails of Virginia’s land. We were encouraged to engage in meditative practices that allowed us to connect with the land in a contemplative way. Each of us found our own spot in the forest to sit and be present with the surroundings.

In the midst of the forest, I came across a fallen tree that had been slowly returning to the earth. As I observed the patterns of nature and the tree’s contribution to the ecosystem, I felt an overwhelming desire to connect even deeper. Trusting the forest, I lay down on the ground, feeling the earth beneath me and allowing the tiny creatures to move around. In this moment, I entered a different realm of consciousness. I sensed the presence of all the black people who had once been slaves, who had labored on this land, contributing to the building of this very university. Their stories, struggles, and spirits enveloped me. I felt the weight of history, the sacrifices made, and the generations of people who had left their mark on this land.
2. A Message of Recognition, Honor, and Celebration
In this meditative state, a clear message emerged. It wasn’t one of regret or hatred; it was a message of recognition, honor, and ultimately, celebration. The ancestors were calling out to be recognized for their contributions. They urged us to acknowledge their sacrifices, to celebrate their resilience despite insurmountable odds. This experience resonated with a powerful calling to honor their struggles by carrying forward their legacy, to never waver in the face of challenges, and to strive for a future that reflects the lessons of the past.

3. Rejuvenation and Upliftment
As I emerged from this profound state of connection, I was rejuvenated. I realized that the land, despite its painful history, held the power to uplift and inspire. It was a redemptive force, a testament to the resilience of collective history.
Sharing this experience with my fellow Dalai Lama Fellows was a moment of collective understanding. We had all undergone our own transformative journeys, finding a unique harmony between our individual selves and the world around us. It’s important to note that reaching this level of connection required a certain level of inner readiness, a deep introspection that allowed us to embrace the external with an open heart.

This experience reinforced the interconnectedness of all things – the ties that bind us to the earth, to our history, and to each other. It highlighted the importance of recognizing our shared past, the contributions of those who came before us, and the responsibilities we hold in shaping the future. Through self-discovery, we not only find ourselves but also uncover the threads that connect us to the rich tapestry of human history.
