Ogweno Stephen Interviewed by BRICS Media on the State of NCDs in Africa

Ogweno Stephen, a prominent health advocate and leader, was recently interviewed by BRICS Media on the critical issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Africa. The interview, conducted by Sir Kenneth Omondi of BRICS Media, provided a comprehensive overview of the rising NCDs burden in sub-Saharan Africa and highlighted potential solutions to this growing continental challenge.

In the interview, Ogweno shed light on the alarming rise of NCDs across the continent. He discussed the pressing need to address diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic respiratory diseases, which are increasingly affecting the health and well-being of millions in Africa. He emphasized that the burden of NCDs is not just a health issue but a socio-economic challenge that impacts productivity and economic development.

Ogweno identified several challenges that Africa faces in combating NCDs. One of the main challenges is the lack of awareness and understanding of NCDs among the general population. This lack of awareness is compounded by myths and misconceptions surrounding these diseases. For instance, many people still believe that NCDs primarily affect the wealthy and that they are not a significant threat to the general population. This misconception leads to low prioritization of NCDs in health policies and limited resources allocated for their prevention and management.

Another challenge Ogweno highlighted is the inadequate healthcare infrastructure and workforce to effectively address NCDs. Many health systems in Africa are still primarily focused on infectious diseases, leaving a gap in the management of chronic conditions. The shortage of healthcare professionals trained to handle NCDs further exacerbates the problem.

Despite these challenges, Ogweno remains optimistic about the future and believes that with concerted efforts, significant progress can be made. He spoke about the potential solutions to tackle the NCDs crisis in Africa, emphasizing the importance of a multi-faceted approach. This includes enhancing public awareness campaigns to educate the population about the risks and prevention of NCDs, integrating NCDs management into primary healthcare systems, and increasing investment in healthcare infrastructure and training.

Ogweno also shared the impactful work being done by his organizations, Stowelink Foundation and Lifesten Health. Through these organizations, he is actively involved in initiatives aimed at raising awareness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and advocating for better health policies. Stowelink Foundation has been instrumental in implementing community-based programs that provide education and screening services for NCDs. Lifesten Health focuses on innovative solutions to improve health outcomes, such as using technology to enhance healthcare delivery and access.

The interview with BRICS Media was a significant platform for Ogweno to voice the urgent need for action against NCDs in Africa. It highlighted his dedication to the cause and the ongoing efforts to create a healthier future for all Africans.
