In my ongoing journey as an advocate for public health, I’ve recently delved deeper into the complexities of the tobacco industry. This has been an eye-opening experience, as I have come to understand more about the industry’s interference and the rising threat of new-generation tobacco and nicotine products. Here’s a glimpse into my recent engagements and the invaluable lessons I’ve learned.
On July 19, 2024, I had the honor of participating in the launch of a comprehensive study report titled “The Landscape of New-Generation Tobacco and Nicotine Products Consumption in Kenya: Challenges for Public Health, Tax Regulatory Framework, and Way Forward.” This pivotal event, organized by the National Taxpayers Association (NTA), brought together key stakeholders including policymakers, health professionals, educators, and community leaders.

The report, commissioned by NTA, dives into the consumption patterns of novel tobacco and nicotine products in Kenya. It assesses the economic impact of these products and underscores the urgent need for robust policy interventions. The study provides valuable insights into the challenges posed by these new-generation products to public health and the existing tax regulatory framework. It highlights the critical need for comprehensive strategies to mitigate the health risks and economic consequences associated with these products.
The findings from this report have significantly enriched my understanding of the complex landscape of tobacco and nicotine product consumption in Kenya. I realized the pressing need for advocacy to address these challenges and promote public health policies that can curb the adverse impacts of these products.
In another significant development, the Stowelink Foundation, represented by our COO Kevin Oduor and myself, recently participated in an event focused on the Tobacco Control Data Initiative (TCDI). This initiative, led by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Development Gateway, an Irex Venture, aims to compile comprehensive tobacco control information into a user-friendly dashboard. Launched in April 2019, the TCDI dashboard serves as a critical tool for the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to enhance the adoption and implementation of effective tobacco control measures in Kenya.

These engagements have sparked a renewed interest in learning about tobacco control tactics and have fueled my determination to advocate for stronger tobacco prevention measures. The rise of novel nicotine and tobacco products presents new challenges, and it’s crucial to stay informed and adapt our strategies accordingly.
The knowledge and insights gained from these events have been invaluable. I am deeply committed to continuing this learning journey, exploring innovative solutions, and collaborating with key stakeholders to combat the tobacco epidemic. As an advocate, I believe that there is no end to learning, especially when it comes to protecting public health and ensuring a healthier future for our communities.

Looking ahead, I am eager to apply these learnings to my advocacy work with the Stowelink Foundation. We remain dedicated to promoting awareness, supporting policy changes, and engaging with communities to prevent the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products. Together, we can make a significant impact and pave the way for a healthier Kenya.
