In life, achieving goals often comes down to timing, opportunity, and determination. One of my top 15 goals for 2024, proudly displayed on my vision board, was to do a creative samurai-themed photo shoot. Initially, this was a 2023 goal that didn’t materialize as planned because I envisioned completing it in full samurai attire. Fast forward to 2024, and although the year had been eventful, this goal seemed destined to remain unchecked. That was until an unexpected opportunity presented itself during my trip to Seoul, Korea.

It was a freezing December weekend, and the temperatures had plummeted to -8°C. Coming from Kenya, where warm weather reigns supreme, I found myself unprepared for the relentless chill. The day before, I had explored the bustling shopping streets of Insadong, battling the cold and nursing the beginnings of a sore throat. I planned to rest the following day, but curiosity got the better of me. A quick Google search revealed something incredible—an opportunity to rent traditional hanbok, including samurai attire, and explore Korea’s iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace in full costume.

In that moment, my excitement overshadowed my fatigue. Despite my illness, the freezing weather, and the premium rental price for the attire, I decided to seize the opportunity. I booked my samurai hanbok online and crafted a plan to pick up some medication along the way to ensure I could enjoy the experience.

The next morning, I woke up with renewed energy, gathered a few adventurous friends, and headed to the palace. Upon arrival, I chose a striking purple hanbok and was dressed by the rental staff. As soon as I stepped out, I was filled with an exhilarating sense of accomplishment. Armed with my phone, gimbal, and Galaxy S Pen, I captured countless self-portraits and stunning shots of the palace grounds.

The day unfolded with unexpected highlights. Locals and tourists alike were fascinated by an African man embracing their culture with such enthusiasm. I took photos with curious onlookers, participated in two impromptu interviews with bloggers, and even met a female U.S. military officer who was thrilled to connect as two Black people celebrating Korean heritage.

This experience taught me powerful lessons about taking action when opportunities arise. It reinforced the idea that writing down goals and believing in their realization can lead to unexpected and fulfilling outcomes.

Reflecting on the day, I was reminded of the importance of aligning intention with effort. Sometimes, the universe conspires to help us achieve what we truly desire, but we must be ready to act. For me, the journey to becoming a samurai for a day was not just about checking off a goal—it was a celebration of culture, creativity, and the serendipity of life.
