Ogweno Stephen Trained on Front-of-Pack Warning Labels in Kenya

I was honored to recently participate—alongside our team—in an intensive capacity-building session on Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPWL) organized by the International Institute for Legislative Affairs (IILA) here in Kenya.

This training brought together passionate civil society actors, public health professionals, and nutrition experts committed to advancing policies that protect Kenyans from the growing burden of diet-related noncommunicable diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

As someone who has lived with and overcome obesity, and who now works at the intersection of policy, youth engagement, and public health, this initiative speaks to me on a deeply personal level.

Why Front-of-Pack Warning Labels Matter

Front-of-Pack Warning Labels are not just stickers on packaging—they are lifesaving tools. They give everyday consumers simple, clear, and honest information about the foods they’re buying—particularly those high in sugar, salt, saturated fats, and trans fats. The global evidence is compelling: countries like Chile and Mexico have used these labels to reduce unhealthy food consumption and push companies to reformulate products.

In Kenya, where ultra-processed foods are rapidly becoming the norm and are heavily marketed to children and young people, this labeling system offers an urgent and powerful step forward.

What We’re Doing at Stowelink

Following this training, Stowelink is taking an active role to:

  • Educate the public—especially youth—about the health risks of poorly labeled foods through digital campaigns and grassroots outreach.
  • Support policy dialogues by working hand-in-hand with civil society partners and government stakeholders to push for national FOPWL adoption.
  • Empower youth voices, ensuring that young people become informed advocates for clearer labeling and healthier food environments.

For me, this work is not just professional—it’s personal. I know firsthand the importance of transparency when making health choices. And I believe that everyone—regardless of background—deserves access to honest, clear, and accessible nutrition information.

As we continue to champion this movement with IILA and other committed partners, I’m proud that Stowelink is standing at the front lines of this vital fight for health equity and food justice.

Because when people know better—they choose better.
And when we label clearly, we save lives.
