Over 1,000 Lives Touched – My Reflections on May Measurement Month 2025

Every May, the world unites under the banner of May Measurement Month (MMM)—a global campaign led by the International Society of Hypertension to raise awareness about the importance of knowing your blood pressure. In Kenya, the campaign is locally championed by the Kenya Cardiac Society, and this year, I had the privilege of leading Stowelink Foundation’s contribution once again.

Over the course of four Sundays in Githurai 44, our passionate team ran community screenings, education drives, and personalized counselling—right in the heart of where people live, shop, and worship. And the result? We screened over 1,000 individuals and had countless meaningful conversations that I believe could save lives.

Here’s what the numbers looked like:

  • Week 1: 274 people screened
  • Week 2: 252 people screened
  • Week 3: 222 people screened
  • Week 4: 258 people screened

But this campaign was about much more than numbers. It was a reminder of the quiet burden that high blood pressure places on our communities—and the gap in awareness that still persists.

Some reflections from the field:

  • Women turned up in larger numbers and with more curiosity.
  • Many men declined, saying, “I feel fine,” which highlighted how perception of health often delays prevention.
  • Younger people were more hesitant, while older adults readily stepped forward.
  • A few participants even joked, “Are you testing for HIV?”—a powerful reminder of how much work we still have to do in normalizing noncommunicable disease (NCD) screenings.
  • Many requested blood sugar tests, underlining a need for integrated NCD services in our grassroots work.

These insights aren’t just observations. They’re guideposts for how we scale and improve future outreach. I’m incredibly proud of the Stowelink team—for showing up consistently, navigating logistical hurdles, and for doing the quiet, tireless work of public health every single Sunday.

A special thank you to the Kenya Cardiac Society for their continued collaboration, and to the International Society of Hypertension for creating a campaign that genuinely changes lives.

At Stowelink, we’ve always believed that awareness is the first step to prevention. Knowing your numbers can change your life—and maybe even save it.

Let’s keep pushing this movement forward.
Know your numbers.
Check your pressure.
Protect your heart.

Here’s to healthier communities, and stronger systems—one screening at a time.
