Ogweno Stephen’s Co-Authored Research Article Becomes Most Viewed Paper on Obesity Reviews Journal

Ogweno Stephen, a renowned Kenyan health advocate and youth leader in non-communicable disease advocacy, has reached another career milestone. A recent research article co-authored by Ogweno has become the most viewed paper on the Obesity Reviews journal, further cementing his position among the most read authors in global obesity research.

The article, titled “Changing the Global Obesity Narrative to Recognize and Reduce Weight Stigma: A Position Statement from the World Obesity Federation,” addresses the urgent need to shift how the world talks about obesity. It calls out the pervasive weight stigma that fuels discrimination and impedes effective health interventions.

As a co-author, Ogweno Stephen contributed his lived experience and policy expertise to a working group assembled by the World Obesity Federation. This group included global researchers, youth advocates, public health experts, and individuals directly affected by obesity. Together, they issued nine key recommendations for global health professionals, researchers, and advocates on how to reshape public health narratives and reduce stigma in both policy and practice.

In the article, the authors emphasize that weight stigma is a human rights issue and a global social determinant of health. They argue that biased narratives—both in science and media—undermine health equity, especially in low- and middle-income countries where the burden of obesity is growing rapidly.

For Stephen Ogweno, this recognition is part of a larger mission. He has long been an advocate for inclusive and person-centered approaches to tackling non-communicable diseases across Africa. His work at both the community level through the Stowelink Foundation and at the global level with organizations like the World Obesity Federation reflects a deep commitment to health justice.

This research article’s impact is yet another step in changing how obesity is understood, addressed, and communicated—pushing back against shame-based approaches and advancing equity-based solutions.

As Ogweno Stephen continues to influence global health policy and practice, he remains a leading voice for reshaping narratives, advancing prevention, and centering lived experience in all health interventions.
