Ogweno Stephen Mentors Tobitate Students for the Second Year

For the second year in a row, I had the privilege of mentoring exceptional Japanese students through the Tobitate programme — a global scholarship initiative that gives young people from Japan the opportunity to study in different countries around the world. Each interaction with these students reaffirms my passion for mentorship. Their drive, clarity of purpose, and courage to dream boldly are truly inspiring.

What stood out most was the diversity of their fields. Among them were robotics researchers, scientists, social artists, explorers, pen makers, and master craftsmen. Despite pursuing such different paths, they all shared a unifying force — a deep understanding of ikigai, their life’s purpose. Every dream they voiced was not just ambitious but deeply personal, rooted in meaning and guided by the desire to create impact.

As I mentored them, I found myself smiling often. Mentorship, after all, is never one-directional. While I was sharing knowledge and guidance, they were equally teaching me about myself — sharpening my reflections on passion, resilience, and purpose. It was a true exchange of learning and inspiration.

Over time, I’ve remained connected with some of the students, meeting them during their visits to Kenya and keeping up with their journeys abroad. I look forward to building the same meaningful connections with this year’s group, whether in Kenya or in other corners of the world where our paths may cross.

What impressed me most was the consistency of their drive and the authenticity behind their goals. To all the Tobitate students I have mentored, my message remains simple: hold onto your passion. Let it guide you, fuel your journey, and anchor you to your purpose wherever life may take you.

Mentoring Tobitate students continues to be a joy — a reminder that the future shines brightest when led by passion, purpose, and action.
