Discovering a City That Balances Leadership, Culture, and Modernity
Travel often teaches us more about leadership and society than many formal meetings ever could. My recent trip to Qatar gave me a lot to think about. Coming from a country that is widely considered one of the safest in the world, I found myself reflecting not only on the beauty of Doha but also on the relationship between leadership, culture, and national identity.
One of the first things that stood out to me was how deeply many Qataris speak about their leader. What surprised me was not only the respect people expressed but also the accessibility of leadership. I heard stories about leaders being present in everyday spaces such as malls and community areas, interacting with citizens and remaining connected to the public. That level of visibility creates a sense of trust and closeness between leadership and the community.
It made me reflect on the importance of leaders remaining grounded in the daily realities of the people they serve.

A Nation That Preserves Culture While Building the Future
Another striking feature of Qatar is how successfully the country has preserved its cultural heritage while building a modern urban landscape. Walking through places like Souq Waqif and later seeing the futuristic skyline of Doha shows how both worlds coexist.
Traditional architecture, clothing, food, and customs are still very visible. At the same time the country has developed world class infrastructure, museums, and urban spaces. That combination of heritage and progress is something many countries struggle to balance.
Seeing it in practice was inspiring.
A Strong Culture of Safety
Safety was another reflection that stayed with me throughout the trip. As a visitor I felt comfortable walking through the city, exploring markets, using the metro, and interacting with people.
It reminded me a lot of my experiences visiting Rwanda, another country known for its strong sense of public safety and order. Safe environments create opportunities for tourism, business, and everyday life to thrive.

A Surprising Kenyan Connection
One unexpected discovery was just how many Kenyans I met during my time in Qatar. In many moments it felt like a second home. From service industries to professional sectors, Kenyans are contributing significantly to the country’s workforce.
Those interactions reminded me of how global the Kenyan diaspora has become and how our people continue to contribute across different parts of the world.
Health Conscious Choices in Everyday Life
As someone deeply involved in public health and advocacy around non communicable diseases, I also found myself observing the health environment in supermarkets and public spaces.
One thing that stood out was how much priority seemed to be placed on healthier drink options. Compared to many countries where sugary drinks dominate supermarket shelves, I noticed a wider range of healthier beverages. Soft drinks were available but they were less prominent.
There are also many parks and public spaces that encourage walking and outdoor activities. Cities that make physical activity part of daily life help prevent many health problems in the long term.

Beauty in the Details
Another detail that caught my attention was the country’s commitment to aesthetics. The flowers lining many of the roads and the attention given to landscaping were remarkable.
Urban beauty is often overlooked when we talk about development, yet it contributes significantly to how people experience their cities.
A Country Willing to Experiment
What impressed me most was Qatar’s willingness to experiment. Whether it is architecture, infrastructure, or cultural institutions, the country seems unafraid to try bold ideas.
That mindset is something I believe many countries can learn from.
A Final Unexpected Fascination
Lastly, I have to mention something that became impossible to ignore during the trip. The fragrance culture in Qatar is incredible. Oud perfumes and traditional scents are everywhere and they leave a strong impression.
It became one of the most memorable sensory experiences of the trip.
Travel always gives perspective. For me, visiting Qatar was not only about attending a global technology summit. It was also about observing how leadership, culture, public spaces, and everyday choices shape a society.
